What To Expect From Microneedling Treatments

Microneedling treatment expectations

While microneedling isn't new, its popularity continues to pick up momentum. Some interest stems from the DIY home version of a roller that's trending on social media outlets. However, this should pique your interest but be recognized for the inferior quality process and results it delivers. Professional Microneedling Treatments are entirely different and should only be carried out by a licensed dermatologist or esthetician. Microneedling is considered a method of dermal remodeling or facial rejuvenation that helps reduce the appearance of skin conditions like wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, rosacea, and brown spots. It's minimally invasive and involves rolling an electric skin-needling device over the area of skin being treated, most commonly the face. The needles prick your skin up to 2mm deep, leaving minor injuries that trigger your body to produce collagen and elastin as part of the natural healing mode. However, before you show up for your first appointment, it's good to know what to expect. This helps eliminate any surprises but should also dispel any fears you have that could be holding you back from trying the procedure.

What To Expect From Microneedling

Before your appointment, some tips for better success include:

  • Stay out of the sun for 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Ask about which medications to avoid directly before your procedure.
  • Arrive with a clean face / no make-up.

The real question most candidates ask about is the pain level? Microneedling is best described as minor discomfort and not actually painful for the average person. It's often compared to having the skin licked by a cat's tongue or having the area gently rubbed with sandpaper. The good news is that the professional performing the process will apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment to reduce minor discomfort. For some clients, the skin may become tight and red, a sensation similar to a sunburn.

After Your Procedure

Before you leave, you should be instructed about follow-up care that includes things like:

  • Avoid washing your face for at least four hours
  • Use a mild moisturizer to help combat dry, peeling, or flaking skin
  • With permission from your doctor, discontinue using anti-inflammatory medications for several days

In most cases, patients can see success with three to six treatments that last up to six months.
